Finnish MP Gets Convicted for Pamphlet Deemed Offensive to Gay People
The conviction also extended to Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola, who was involved in publishing the text. Rasanen, 66, was fined €1,800 ($2,100), while Pohjola received a €1,100 ($1,300) fine. The court additionally ordered both defendants to remove the unlawful sections of the pamphlet from online platforms.
According to the ruling, the publication insulted homosexuals as a group based on their sexual orientation. In the pamphlet titled *‘Male and Female He Created Them: Homosexual relationships challenge the Christian concept of humanity’*, Rasanen claimed that homosexuality constitutes a “developmental disorder,” which the court deemed as incitement against a group.
Rasanen was acquitted on a separate charge concerning a 2019 tweet in which she criticized the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland for “elevating shame and sin” by partnering with a gay pride parade.
A medical doctor by training, Rasanen served as Finland’s Minister of the Interior from 2011 to 2015. She expressed shock at the verdict and announced plans to consult lawyers regarding a potential appeal.
